Sergio has years of professional experience in higher education and government, is a Marine Corps Veteran, and models the importance of civic participation through his leadership and involvement in numerous community organizations. Sergio’s story is a source of inspiration, and provides many teachable moments.
Sergio spent years researching his community through his participation and engagement in a wide and diverse range of organizations. Through these experiences and interactions, Sergio gained an in-depth knowledge of his city and its residents. Sergio’s journey and commitment to improving the City of Buffalo led him towards a path of leadership. His high energy approach and unique understanding of the urban landscape culminated in a dynamic campaign for the city’s highest elected office. In 2013, Sergio became one of Buffalo’s youngest and Buffalo’s first Hispanic-American candidate endorsed for Mayor.
His proven leadership in the areas community activism, volunteering, civic engagement and the military were the result of critical decisions made while overcoming seemingly insurmountable life obstacles.
Sergio’s background provides him the ability to inspire audiences towards a path of self-determination, and makes him a unique and people-centric civic engagement and leadership expert. He credits his achievements to the power of decision-making and the value of collaboration to achieve a common goal.
A high energy and dynamic speaker, Sergio has shared his story with audiences at dozens of venues which include collegiate settings, schools, religious organizations and business institutions. Sergio has speaks on a wide-range of topics which center around leadership, civic engagement and organizational development.
He has appeared on NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS and Timer Warner Cable affiliates, heard on WBFO, WBEN, WECK, WUFO and Think Twice Radio, and has been featured on the pages of The Buffalo News, Artvoice, Buffalo Spree among several other media outlets.
Sergio is currently very active in the community, serving in various leadership roles. He is on the Board of Directors of the Greater Niagara Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serves on the board of El Museo, Hispanic American Veterans Memorial Committee of WNY and the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park. He is the current Chairman of the Buffalo District Boy Scouts of America.
